Humber Authorities Calibration Services

The Humber Authorities Calibration Test Centre was officially opened in October 1994.

Since 1996 it has been a partnership between the four Humber Authorities shown below.

At the same time there was a growing demand from local industry for traceable calibrations for ISO 9000. This was recognised by the European Regional Development Fund and a grant of £360,000 was made to enable state-of-the-art equipment to provide calibrations to small to medium enterprises.

Weight/Mass

Calibrations of mass are carried out by comparing the force exerted by a body with the force exerted by a standard of a higher accuracy. All calibrations are traced back to the UK Primary standards and then to the international prototype of the kilogram. The Centre maintains three weight sets (two E2 and one F1) which are calibrated by the National Weights and Measures Laboratory and a one tonne stainless steel weight calibrated by the National Physical Laboratory.

From 1 milligram stainless steel weights almost too small to see to one tonne cast iron block weights, the Calibration test Centre can calibrate weights to your requirement.

M1 Weights

OIML class M1 weights are weights of cast iron or brass that are used for testing Class III machines.

At 1 kg the error allowance for an M1 weight is ±50 mg and the uncertainty of calibration is ±10 mg.

All calibrations are traceable to National Standards and details of this traceability are included in the certificate.

Cleaning, painting and numbering of weights can be provided at additional charge.

F2 Weights

OIML class F2 weights are weights of stainless steel or plated brass, which are suitable for testing Class II, machines.

At 1 kg the error allowance on an F2 weight is ±15 mg and the uncertainty of calibration is ±3 mg.

F1 Weights

OIML class F1 weights are made of stainless steel and are used for calibrating 3 or 4 decimal place laboratory scales.

At 1 kg the error allowance for an F1 weight is ±5 mg and the uncertainty of measurement is ±1 mg.

Calibrations are carried out against our E2 weights under computer control. Air density is automatically calculated for each calibration.

High capacity weights

The centre calibrates weights up to 1 tonne.

Accuracy achieved at 1 tonne is an error of ± 100 g with an uncertainty of ± 20 g.

Trade weights

Weights, which are in use for trade, must be tested by a weights and measures inspector and be stamped with the inspector's stamp.

At 1 kg the tolerance for a trade weight is, for verification + 200 mg - 0 and for use in the field ±200 mg.

All calibrations are in accordance with the Weights Regulations 1986.

Volume

The centre can calibrate volume measures and pipettes from 1ml to 50 litres.

Most of the work done with volumetric calibration is providing the weights and measures inspectors of six local authorities with accurately calibrated equipment when they carry out inspections on petrol forecourts or licensed premises.

Calibrations are done gravimetrically and calculated taking into account water temperature, vessel temperature and air density.

Temperature 

The centre maintains UKAS certified platinum resistance thermometers which operate with temperature controlled baths in the range -50°C to 250°C.

Room/Fridge thermometers can be also be calibrated in the range -1°C to 40°C.

Discounts are available if 2 or more items are submitted at the same time and tested at the same points.

Torque

Torque wrenches, torque meters, torque drivers and cap testers can be tested in the range 0.1Nm to 1000Nm using our UKAS calibrated transducers and ETS control system.

Calibration of a ship torque wrench

Length

The length standards maintained by the Centre have been tested by the National Weights and Measures Laboratory.

We can test up to 30 m by direct comparison or length measuring machines up to 1000 m.

Pressure

The Centre has an air deadweight tester UKAS calibrated in both bar and pounds per square inch.

Pressure gauges can be calibrated up to 100 pounds per square inch or 10 bar.

Tyre pressure gauges can be calibrated up to 150 pounds per square inch.

Calibration for air pressure

Weighbridge Test Unit

The Centre operates a 46 tonne Weighbridge Test Unit which operates throughout the country.

It carries 20 x 1 tonne block weights and a fork lift truck to move the weights.

The weights are adjusted to ±50g tolerance (50% test weight tolerance) and are adjusted against a 1 tonne stainless steel weight certificated by the National Physical Laboratory.
